The first groundbreaking ceremony at Temasek Polytechnic

SIT and Temasek Polytechnic (TP) held a ground breaking ceremony on 5 July 2012 for a new SIT building located at the grounds of TP. This ground breaking ceremony is the first of five SIT ground breaking ceremonies, which will be held at every polytechnic site as construction commences in each location.

Guests from TP, our overseas university partners, our industry partners, and media friends were addressed by Mr Seah Moon Ming, Chairmain, Board of Governors, TP and Prof Tan Chin Tiong, President, SIT. A symbolic ceremony followed soon after with Mr Boo Kheng Hua, Principal & CEO, TP; and Mr Ng Cher Pong, Deputy Chairman, Board of Trustrees, SIT; taking the stage with Mr Seah and Prof Tan.

When construction is completed by 2014, SIT plans to house its overseas university partners, The Glasgow School of Art (GSA) which offers Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Communication Design and Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Interior Design; and The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) which offers Bachelor of Professional Studies in Culinary Art Management at its new building in TP.

Situated on a total site area spanning approximately 4,000 square metres, the new SIT building at TP will have a total gross floor area of 11,670 square metres and is located along the north boundary of the TP campus. Forum Architects Pte Ltd, the consultancy team who designed the building, took advantage of the site’s close proximity to Bedok Reservoir and arranged facilities like the common spaces and elevated activity decks in a linear manner to allow students a panoramic view of the reservoir. These vistas will also channel airflow into the building to allow natural ventilation.

The new SIT building will comprise five stories of teaching facilities, academic offices, and two large lecture halls. To accommodate the professional degrees offered by GSA and CIA, there will also be design studios, a culinary theatre, fully-equipped training kitchens and a training café. On top of these facilities, SIT will also set aside space to allow for future expansion plans and possibly house new programmes.
